DROP-IN POLICY
In order to maintain the level of quality instruction that we have established during the first 2 years at Eugene School of Yoga, drop-in attendence is only permitted during Led classes and Sunday Beginners class. Mysore classes are only open to regularly enrolled students. However, traveling ashtangis with a solid background in the Primary Series may drop-in to any class.
The contemporary Ashtanga Yoga system is typically practiced 3-6 days/week.
It is a vigorous, difficult and highly rewarding yoga system which is accessible to people of almost all ages and backgrounds, but is not conducive to drop-in study. All of our classes follow the same basic curriculum and our faculty meet regularly to make sure we're all on the same page.
Within the Ashtanga system, there is a rhythm to the practice week. Each day of the week has a slightly different emphasis as we progress from Sunday through Friday.
There are approximately 30 students currently enrolled for one month or longer. The classes are directed towards these individuals who have made the committment to enroll and seriously explore our school and the system we practice. Drop-in's require a lot of extra attention and tend to take the instructor's focus away from the regular students who have made a committment to regular practice.
This is why single-class drop-ins are now limited to Led classes and sunday Beginners class only. Not to be exclusive, but to maintain the quality of instruction which we have worked so hard to establish over the last year.
It takes approximately 2-8 sessions to bring new students "up to speed" with the rest of the school. Enabling you - before too long - to join in any class on our schedule. We have discovered over time that if your initial visits are spread out over time in the drop-in fashion, then each time you come is like the first time. Potentially leaving you sore and frustrated AND potentially giving you an inaccurate perception of this yoga system and our particular school.
Once a student has been through the initial learning phase and established a foundation of basic knowledge and physical conditioning, there is the option of a 5-class card for $60.00 which is valid for 6 weeks - but it is the least recommended of the enrollment options and it is only available to previously enrolled students or travelling Ashtangis with a solid, working knowledge of the Ashtanga system. Generally - regular students use it to fill the awkward gaps in scheduling that happen with family, work, travel, etc. However - the 5 class-card is a temporary fix until the student can adjust his/her schedule in order to attend more regularly.
Students with previous Ashtanga experience are provided more flexibility in the beginning because they don't require so much individual attention. But again - we encourage every student towards regular attendance.
The Eugene School of Yoga is not a retail business. It is a school, as the name indicates, where students enroll for a period of study. Drop-in attendence necessitates handling petty cash and small checks from many people on a per-class basis, making the sign-in process long and awkward before every class and shifting the emphasis from practice to money and an excess of administration. This distracts the faculty and students from our real purpose - the practice of Yoga.
Thanks for your understanding.
Sincerely,
Kevin Kimple
